Anne James Ceramics

I grew up in rural Perthshire and studies microbiology at The University of Edinburgh. I then moved to London where I worked in clinical microbiology research until I left my job to pursue a lifelong love of the creative arts. I studied art history at the V&A, and ceramics at Camberwell College of Art. The birth of my daughter in 2001 prompted a move back up north to rural north Northumberland where we have lived ever since.

My ceramics are inspired by texture and the natural world. I work mainly in porcelain but also in stoneware. The challenge of constructing a piece is what I enjoy. Childhood holidays on the Mull of Kintyre gave me a passion for collecting pebbles and sea glass which are often incorporated into my work. Many lovely holidays to slightly more exotic places have afforded the opportunity to collect sea glass from around the world. My pieces are textured with treasures bought or found on holiday, or with wallpapers from my childhood home. Old printing blocks are a particular favourite for creating texture. I love to explore the layering of colour on a piece with varied glazes, often pairing traditional celadon with raku glazes. My scientific background also helps me create new glaze recipes with the addition of oxides.
