Janet lives in East Lothian and has studied with The Open College of the Arts and at Leith School of Art.
Her theme is Scottish dancing, using mixed media, plotting out the familiar shapes made by the dancers. She works by scraping and scratching vibrant colours across the painting, addressing the challenge of capturing both the exuberant movement of the dance and the look of the tartan.
She works from sketches, her photographs and from life by attending Highland dancing competitions, Scottish Country Dancing events and Ceilidhs all over Scotland. Her aim is to make the viewer smile and to induce a sense of nostalgia while putting a modern twist on the spectacle of these ancient traditional dances.
Her paintings have been used to illustrate the Royal Scottish Country Dancing Society’s Annual Review for 2011.
