Born and educated in Edinburgh, Iain has painted or drawn for as long as he can remember. He has however, spent most of his adult life working in public health in the NHS. Some twelve years ago he decided to follow his first love and now paints full time.
“The places around me, Scotland and the wonderful sights I experience when I travel, my passion for flowers – these are the things that inspire me to pick up the paint brushes. I try to keep it simple and speak directly to the viewer about the emotional response to colours, shape shadows and the fleeting light I experience. If I can communicate to the viewer a little of this then the painting has succeeded.”
Iain is largely self taught but has attended and been inspired by a number of short courses. His chosen medium is watercolour and works from drawings, photos and water colour sketches done on site. He has exhibited widely and has paintings in collections in the USA, Sweden, Holland, Ireland and across the UK.
He has recently returned to live in the Borders to be close to the landscapes that inspire him.
